Easter Team Trip To Snowdonia 2008 Report

On our team Easter Break in Snowdonia we managed 3 good days of walking and navigation training mixed in with some great basic winter work on the last of the 3 walking days.

Good Friday - Moel Eilio 726, Foel Gron 593, Foel Goch 605 basic navigation training with the whole group.
It should have been a nice easy "walk-in" for those with little or no basic skills, however with the temperature at 0 degrees on the tops with winds of 35 -40 mph with gusts of 45 - 50 mph it was a little more exciting than anticipated by some!

Easter Saturday Team 1 -  Moel Ysgyfarnogod 623. Micro navigation, pacing, timings, aspect of slope, feature recognition training. The conditions were much more agreeable for training and the lovely sunshine made the cold day very agreeable.

Easter Saturday Team 2 - Moel Hebog 782.

Easter Sunday Team 1 - Y Garn 947, Foel Goch 831 from Llanberis

Excellent full mountain day with great winter conditions. Temperature -4 degrees, winds at 20 - 30mph. Visability very variable. The team was able to experience bad visability, cold weather conditions, ice under foot, knee deep snow in places, the development of a cornice, loss of horizon....... all good stuff! and ane xcellent day walking. Navigation skills learnt on days 1 & 2 were utilized "in anger" due to the bad vis in places. The team had to "leapfrog" taking bearings off each other until visibility improved in lower ground.
I pulled an old photo out of the archive from last year on Foel Goch to compare to one from this year... spot the difference!

Easter Sunday Team 2 - Micro nav training West of Llanberis

Easter Monday was a rest and research day (for that read shopping and looking at viable crags for basic single pitch tuition).

The journey back was via the Centre for Alternative Technology  @ Machynlleth, Powys in mid Wales. If you want to learn more about the evironment, how to protect it and what you can do to live a sustainable lifestyle (and combine it with a great day out!) then give it a visit - click here - for details
